Cruise Control Driving School Inc. of Summerville has awarded a total of $2,000 in academic scholarships – $500 each to four graduates from Summerville area schools.

The recipients are William Henley of Ashley Ridge High School, Lauren Beasley of Fort Dorchester High School, Sean Carter of Pinewood Prep, and Cassie Sobers of Summerville High School.

William Henley is the son of Bill and Toni Henley of Summerville. Henley will attend the University of South Carolina and pursue a degree in Marketing. He wants to be an entrepreneur and hopes to own his own business one day.

Lauren Beasley is the daughter of Dave and Michele Beasley of North Charleston. She graduated from Fort Dorchester in the top one percent of her class. Beasley will attend the University of Virginia where she will study medicine and wants a career as a Registered Nurse.

Sean Carter, this year’s Pinewood Prep valedictorian, is the son of Paul Carter and Anne Gleason of Summerville. Carter will attend the Olin School of Engineering in Boston, Mass., and plans a career as an engineer upon graduation.

Cassie Sobers is the daughter of Jeff and Bridgett Sobers of Summerville. She graduated in the top one percent of her class and will attend Boston University. Sobers will study biology and sports medicine in pursuit of a career as an orthopedic surgeon.

The Cruise Control Driving School scholarships were awarded based on a compilation of applicants’ academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community service, and SAT/ACT scores, as well as their overall driving record since getting their license documented through a certified DMV record. The students also had to write an essay on what their career plans were as well as the obstacles they expected enroute to their career.

Cruise Control Driving School owners Kent Lee and Jeff Porter began awarding the scholarships 10 years ago because it is the community’s students who are responsible for the success of their business.
