Pinewood Athletic Director Andy Morgan announced on Tuesday that Jay Buddin will lead the Panther varsity baseball team.

Buddin, who is no stranger to the Panthers’ program, brings a deep knowledge of the sport to the head coach position. He has been JV Coach at Pinewood and last season served at the assistant and pitching coach on the varsity team.

Buddin was also head coach at Rollings Middle School from 2006-2009 and an assistant coach at Fort Dorchester High School in 2010.

Buddin has been around baseball all of his life. As a high school player he led Colleton Prep to a SCISA 3A State Championship in 1980 and was named MVP. Buddin was a three-time all-region and all-state player as a pitcher and infielder. He finished high school with a .510 batting average.

Buddin played college baseball at Francis Marion University until suffering a career-ending eye injury after being hit by a pitch. He was a co-founder of the Summerville Tigers travel baseball team that was part of the first travel team organization in the Summerville area. While with the organization, Buddin led his team to a Top 10 national ranking and 10 members of that team went on to play college baseball.

“We are very excited to name Jay Buddin as our Varsity Baseball Head Coach,” Morgan said, “Jay is the right coach to take over the baseball program. He has been with the team for three years and understands the expectations and philosophy at Pinewood.

“He has great knowledge of the game, its history within the school, and believes in the development of our athletes as both a player and a person. Jay has the drive and skill-set to be successful, which is evident to everyone who is around him, and the players feed off of that type of confidence in their coach.”

Pinewood also announced that Tony Osterman, who was an assistant coach on the Panthers’ staff this past spring, will now be Associate Head Coach on Buddin’s staff. He is a graduate of Chicora High School where he was a three-sport athlete.

“I am thrilled to announce that Coach Tony Osterman will serve as Associate Head Coach,” Morgan said. “Tony joined our varsity baseball staff last year and had an immediate impact on our players’ development.

“Coach Osterman built a great rapport working with our athletes in his first season at Pinewood as our hitting coach. He does a fantastic job at evaluating and teaching the proper mechanics for each player’s swing and getting them to see the results.”

After high school, Osterman continued to play baseball in state and was asked to play in Puerto Rico. He began his coaching career when his three kids started playing sports.

Osterman has spent more than 30 years coaching baseball throughout the state. During the summers he also worked with the South Carolina Diamond Devils AAU team, as an assistant. He is the head coach for the East Coast Baseball Academy and a staff member for the Diamond Prospects since 2006. While assisting with the Diamond Prospects showcases, he helps young players obtain the opportunities and experiences to expose their talents in front of college and pro scouts.

Osterman has been an employee of SCE&G for more than 35 years and has a degree in Business Science from Southern Wesleyan University.

Another member set to be a part of the coaching staff is Tony Kolgaklis. He will be joining Buddin’s staff as an assistant coach.

Kolgaklis is a former assistant baseball coach at both Summerville High School and Ashley Ridge High School and owner/operator of Coach Tony’s Baseball and Softball training center in Summerville.

Pinewood Head of School Steve Mandell reflects positively on the new coaching staff: “I have no doubt that Jay, with the support of Tony and the entire baseball coaching staff, will enhance the level of excellence in the Pinewood baseball program and ensure the team’s success well into the future.”
