Heritage Square to feature shooting range

A new sporting goods store with an 18-lane indoor shooting range is scheduled to open its doors in Summerville next year.

For years the Heritage Square shopping center has been sitting empty at the intersection of Berlin G. Myers Parkway and U.S. 78. The property was sold in September 2013 to 338 Magnum, LLC with plans of installing a sporting goods store.

That store is called the Palmetto State Armory of Columbia – and it is actually opening in two locations, one in Summerville and the other in Mt. Pleasant.

The Mt. Pleasant location is anticipated to open in the fourth quarter of 2014. The Summerville project will likely open by end of the third quarter of 2015, said Chief Marketing Officer Adam Ruonala.

“The Town of Summerville has been absolutely wonderful in terms of working with us,” Ruonala told The Journal Scene.

The Summerville site will feature the 18-lane shooting range and will sell sporting goods including guns, fishing gear, clothing and more. The range/store will occupy the former K-Mart building.

“It’s got a lot of wear and tear on it,” he said. “I’m from Summerville originally and remember when it was actually K-Mart. We’re hoping to have the store open and complete by September 2015 if things work out.”

Ruonala anticipates the beautification phase will create 50 jobs for the area and the store will offer another 50 jobs.

The entire store is going to be more than 30,000 square feet. Ruonala said the whole shopping center is going to be refurbished and the rest of the space will be rented out to other tenants – Ruonala added they are already “entertaining offers” from prospective tenants.

“It’s not going to be little,” Ruonala said. “That shopping center is so large that there is going to be opportunities for other companies to come in as well.”

Madelyn Robinson, director of planning and economic development for Summerville, said the town has not received any construction plans for permit at this time.

The project did go before the town’s commercial design review board to look at details like landscaping, lighting, materials and paint colors, and those aesthetic plans were finalized in April.

Ruonala said Palmetto State Armory chose Mt. Pleasant and Summerville as its new locations because of an “outpouring of requests” to come closer to Charleston. He said Summerville appears to have a number of people who enjoy the outdoors and believe in the right to bear arms.

“We’re really excited,” Ruonala said. “We think it’s going to do really well in terms of public reception.”

The Mt. Pleasant location will be 21,000 square feet and located at 3365 South Morgans Point Road. It will not feature a shooting range.
