The Town of Summerville will treat its residents to free movies next month.
Town officials are encouraging everyone to bring their blankets or lawn chairs to Gahagan Park for a free night at the movies. The Free Movies at the Park series opens in August with viewings for three different movies at the Gahagan football field, located at 515 West Boundary Street. Movies will be shown on a removable 20-foot by 11-foot screen set up just for the event.
“The mayor has wanted to do this for some time and we are excited,” Town Events and Media Coordinator/Public Information Officer Tiffany Norton said. “It is a family-friendly event that should appeal to different age groups. We encourage families to pack a picnic basket so it’s not expensive. Beer and wine are allowed but glass bottles, tents and pets are not permitted.”
Vendors will be on hand to sell items such as sodas, popcorn and Italian ice but the event will not include any non-food vendors.
Plans call for the town to have a pair of Free Movies at the Park series per year with each series including six to eight movies. Scheduled dates include Aug. 8, 22 and 29.
“We want to offer a variety,” Norton said. “We are opening the series with the movie Divergent, which has a PG-13 rating. A few weeks later we will have Frozen, which is more of a kids’ movie. For the next series we will probably consider some older movies or something more adult friendly.”
The event will give residents the chance to see Divergent three days before it comes out on DVD.
For those wanting to come early to ensure they have a good seat, the park’s playground will also be open until nightfall.
