There were a couple of changes to the Summerville High School varsity football staff over the summer but most of the Green Wave’s veteran coaches are back for the 2014 season.

Green Wave Head Football Coach John McKissick, who will celebrate his 88th birthday in September, returns for his 63rd season in charge of the Summerville High School football program. He is also the school’s athletic director.

At Summerville he has coached 10 state championship teams and notched 612 wins, which is more than any other football coach at any level. But he is the first to tell you he didn’t do it by himself.

“I’ve been lucky to have such a good staff all these years,” McKissick said. “All my assistant coaches have a lot of knowledge about football and about the positions they coach. The hardest job with coaching is getting players in the right position to best help the team. If a guy is tall and quick, but can’t catch the ball, he needs to be somewhere other than the receiver position.”

The majority of his assistants have been with him for several seasons.

Joe Call, McKissick’s grandson, returns as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Fred Edwards is back to coach the receivers. Also back on that side of the ball is Chris Digby. While he worked primarily with the linemen last year, this season he will coach the running backs.

Summerville lost seasoned coach Buddy King to another program, but McKissick has brought back Jody Kafina to coach the offensive line. He left the Green Wave program a few years ago to take over as the Pinewood Prep head coach and coached at Cane Bay last year.

Summerville also has an abundance of coaching savvy on defensive. Returning on that side of the ball are Britt Blanton (outside linebackers), Comp McCurry (inside linebackers), Steve Wilson (secondary), Alan Bridges (defensive line) and Ken White (secondary).

Edwards, Blanton, McCurry and Wilson have all been on McKissick’s staff for the past 20 years. Call, Digby, McCurry, Bridges, Blanton and White all played for McKissick when they were in high school. Edwards was a Columbia High School athlete and Wilson played for Hudgens Academy.

This year the Summerville JV team is again practicing with the varsity. Coaches who will help out with both programs include Derek Ayers (offensive line), Kevin Bellush (receivers), Bo Charpia (offensive backs), Mike Monnet (defensive line), Brent Sizemore (linebackers) and Ian Lenke (defensive backs).

As the head JV coach, Lenke will call the shots for Green Wave on Thursday nights this season. Burt Bazzle returns as the head coach for the Summerville B-team.

Bryan Jordan returns as the Green Wave kicking coach.
