A pair of Summerville-area football teams will not begin the 2014 season in traditional fashion.
For years, most teams in the area have unofficially opened their season at the Sertoma Football Classic.
Hosted by the Sertoma Club of Charleston, the event brings some 30 Lowcountry teams to a central location each year to pair off in scrimmages that last one or two quarters each.
Part of the appeal of the event is it give fans an early glimpse of several local teams at once, and give students the opportunity to demonstrate their school spirit.
Scheduled for Aug. 21-22 at Johnson-Hagood Stadium, the 44th annual Sertoma Football Classic will feature a full two nights of action but the event won’t have as much appeal to Fort Dorchester and Ashley Ridge fans as it has in the past because neither of those teams are in the lineup.
“In order to get in all our regular season games we had to schedule a game for Week 0,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “Unfortunately that is the week of the Sertoma Classic.”
Ashley Ridge opens its regular season Aug. 22 by hosting Woodland.
Fort Dorchester will also miss this year’s Sertoma as it opens its regular season Aug. 22 with a game at South Florence.
The three other Summerville-area high schools will participate.
Summerville, which has participated in the Sertoma Football Classic since the event’s first year, is scheduled to play Hanahan in a scrimmage in the third quarter of this year’s opening night.
However, the Green Wave won’t send its starters to that scrimmage.
Like Ashley Ridge and Fort Dorchester, the realignment of Class AAAA regions caused Summerville scheduling problems for the upcoming season. To get in its allotted regular-season games, Summerville scheduled a game in Charlotte Aug. 22 against Providence High School.
Green Wave coach John McKissick said his starters will play against Providence and Summerville will send its “second team” to play in the Sertoma Football Classic.
Cane Bay will also participate in the first evening of the event. The Fighting Cobras will face Military Magnet in the second quarter.
That night will feature a pair of two-quarter scrimmages. After Summerville and Hanahan scrimmage, Stratford and Timberland will scrimmage for two quarters.
In the final scrimmage of the evening, Goose Creek and West Ashley will pair off for two quarters.
The next night, Pinewood Prep will scrimmage Woodland in the fourth quarter. Following that scrimmage will be a two-quarter scrimmage between Berkeley and Porter-Gaud.
The final action of that evening will be a two-quarter scrimmage with Wando against Bishop England.
