The American Red Cross Carolina Lowcountry Chapter recognized supporters of its Heroes for Fire Victims Campaign. Because of the individuals and businesses who supported the Heroes for Fire Victims Campaign, Red Cross was able to assist 200 Lowcountry families affected by home fires between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014.

While peak fire season doesn’t begin until September, there have been an unusually high number of significant house fires already this year in Summerville, according to Summerville Fire Department Chief Richard Waring.

“There have been as many significant fires in Summerville in the first six months of this year as there were in all of 2013,” said Waring. “We are grateful that the Red Cross is there to help victims of home fires.”

The American Red Cross is the only social service organization on the scene of a home fire assisting victims with temporary shelter, funds to replace food and clothing, and other immediate emergency needs.

The Palmetto SC Region responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours.
