Former Lady Green Wave standout Kwanza Murray will play for the Lackawanna College Women’s Basketball Team next school year.

Murray was joined by family and friends Saturday to celebrate her signing with the Scranton, Pa. junior college.

“I tried out for the team when I was there on vacation and I made it,” Murray said. “I’m excited and looking forward to playing at another level. There is good competition there, but I think I’ll do fine if I put my heart and soul into it.”

Early on, Murray demonstrated she had the skills to play beyond high school. As a freshman she became a major contributor for Summerville and helped her AAU team to an undefeated season and a state championship. As a sophomore she earned all-region honors. That success carried into her junior year, but she wasn’t able to play for the Green Wave as a senior and the scholarship offers her family once hoped would come from college programs never did.

The ordeal served as a wakeup call.

“I know I have to stay focused and stay out of trouble in order to do good things in life,” Murray said.

She continued to play basketball with the Queens of Charleston AAU team so her shooting remained sharp. Last season she led the team in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game, and was among the leading rebounders.

“Kwanza is a unique individual who can play at a high level,” Queens of Charleston coach Fred Paden said. “She puts so much effort into the game. She has a passion for it that I don’t see in a lot of kids.”

He is hoping Murray will eventually be able to transfer to a Division 1 college.

“She is not scared to go to the hole and she can shoot from outside,” he said. “A team can use her as a shooting guard or to play the three.”

Murray plans to major in Communications/Media Arts.
