Pinewood Prep opens its 2014 football season Tuesday.

The Panthers will host First Baptist at 7:30 p.m. in one of the first games of the high school season.

“We have some great kids this year and they are excited about starting the season,” Pinewood coach Michael Wright said. “We are sure they will also be excited and we expect them to be a tough opponent. We saw them in a 7-on-7 competition this summer and I have respect for their coach. They seem like a well balanced team so we are going to have to play well in all three aspects of the game – offense, defense and special teams.”

Pinewood had more athletes come out for football this season than it did last season. Approximately 30 players are expected to dress out for Tuesday’s game.

“Preseason practice has gone well for us, except for some rain,” Wright said. “When you have small numbers like we do you have to have a delicate balance of not too much contact, but enough. I know our players are looking forward to not having to hold anything back.”

The Panthers will also participate in the Sertoma Football Classic Aug. 22.

The Pinewood swimming team opens its season at the Spartanburg invitational Aug. 16. The Lady Panthers volleyball team plays at Hilton Head Aug. 19 and at Ashley Ridge Aug. 20. The JV match at AR is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and the varsity match will follow around 5:30 p.m.
