Panthers break streak

Roger Lee/Journal Scene Panther receiver Tatum Rowland dashes up the sideline for a touchdown Tuesday.

The Pinewood Prep football team broke a 19-game losing streak Tuesday, defeating First Baptist 46-0 in the season opener for both teams.

“I’m very happy for the guys,” second-year Pinewood coach Michael Wright said. “I’m happy for the guys who persevered through last year and came back. I ‘m happy for the guys who came out for football who hadn’t played (before). All that means a lot.”

The Panthers scored most of their touchdowns on the ground but did complete several big passes, including a touchdown reception from Lewis Vaughan to Tatum Rowland that covered more than 95 yards. Leslie Redden led the Panthers’ rushing attack, surpassing the 100-yard rushing mark and scoring on touchdown runs of approximately 19 and 8 yards.

Andrew Latham, Vaughan, Austin Murphy and Matthew Latham also rushed for TDs. Matthew Latham had the longest TD run of the evening, a 45-yard scoring scamper.

Ryan Huiet handled the place kicking duties for the Panthers and played on offense as well as on defense. He made four PAT kicks, three interceptions and a reception during the game.

The closest the Hurricanes came to scoring was when they moved the ball inside the Pinewood 5-yard line late in the second quarter before the Panthers forced a turnover on downs.
