Jenkins signs with Indians

Roger Lee/Journal Scene John Jenkins, on Aug. 14, signed with the USC-Salkehatchie men’s basketball team.

The leading scorer for last year’s Green Wave basketball team will play for USC-Salkehatchie College this school year.

Summerville High School graduate John Jenkins, on Thursday, signed with the Indians Men’s Basketball team. Jenkins, who finished his Green Wave career as an All-state player and with 1,041 points, said he is relieved to finally know where he will start college.

“It was a tough process for me because I was talking to some other schools but things just didn’t work out,” Jenkins said. “Then Coach Hendren called and said he was interested. He showed me around the campus and it was a great visit. It is a small campus but I think at a smaller college you get close with your professors and it will be easy to get to know people. Plus, I think Coach Hendren will be able to help me get to that next level.”

Jenkins was the 2013-14 Region 8-AAAA Player of the Year and participated in the North-South All-star Game. As a senior, he averaged 20.2 points per game and was a 67 percent free throw shooter. The guard had 54 assists and 89 rebounds. In all, Jenkins was part of three region championship teams.

First-year Indians Head Coach Corey Hendren said he envisions Jenkins having a similar role to the one he played at SHS in his program.

“John is a scorer,” he said. “He finds ways to put the ball in the basket. He did that his whole high-school career. The way we play, he will be able to continue that type of play. I’m expecting him to be a huge part of what we do.”

Jenkins said he will likely play some at the point and some as a shooting guard, which should help him become more well rounded and achieve his goal of playing for a four-year college.

“I need to improve my mid-range shot and my ball handling a bit and I’m sure Coach Hendren can help me with that,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins plans to major in Sports Management.

Joining him on the Indians’ team will be fellow SHS graduate Christian Kalacanic, who also signed with USC-Salkehatchie Thursday. For more on how Kalacanic may fit into the Indians’ program, see Friday’s issue.
