The Ashley Ridge volleyball team is out to a strong start.

The Swamp Foxes made the semi-finals of a competitive preseason tournament held at Carolina Forest Saturday. Ashley Ridge took Aiken to a third game in the semifinals before being eliminated by a 15-13 loss. The Swamp Foxes also held their own against the other team that advanced to the finals, Blythewood.

“Our girls were amazing,” Ashley Ridge coach Chi-Chi Hurley said. “We played Blythewood in pool play and split with them and we took Aiken to a third game in the semifinals. We were only two points away from going to the finals.”

It is the best the Swamp Foxes have done at the tournament in several attempts.

On Tuesday, Ashley Ridge opened its regular season with a 25-9, 25-9, 25-9 victory over Cane Bay.

Junior Chynna Hunt was a big contributor both at the net and the service line.

Senior Olivia Boykin was also strong up front and senior Sabrina Spencer handled much of the setting duties for the Swamp Foxes.

Hurley said she likes what she has seen from her team so far.

“I have some great talent on this team and our practices have gone well,” Hurley said. “These girls take it serious but they also get along so well that practices run smoothly and go by fast. They have taken the things we have worked on in practice and put it out there on the court. Tonight we had players trying to hit different sets and our passing was tremendous.”

Ashley Ridge hosts West Ashley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and has road games at Hanahan and Goose Creek Wednesday and Thursday.
