The Swamp Foxes face the Trojans and their wide-open offense Friday.
The Ashley Ridge football team hits the road for a 7:30 p.m. game at James Island, the Swamp Foxes’ first road game of the season. The Trojans are making the move back up to Class AAAA football this year and have a new head coach in Ike Allred. However, Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker says James Island means business.
“James Island had a big win against Hanahan and they look like they are a hungry team,” Walker said. “They throw more than they run so our challenge defensively is tackling their speedy wide receivers in space and making sure our coverages are communicated to everyone in the secondary. Any mistakes and they could score quickly.”
Senior Devontre Hamilton has returned to the Trojan offensive backfield after gaining a lot of yards last season so James Island can run when it chooses.
“They use three running backs and their starter is impressive,” Walker said. “We will have to get as many people to the ball as we can when he has it.”
Buss Hamilton had a good night running the ball for the Trojans in their Week 0 game, which James Island won 29-27. He ended the game behind center due to an injury and finished with more than 100 rushing yards.
Trojan sophomore quarterback Gage Moloney completed 21 of 36 pass attempts for 232 yards and a TD before being injured.
The Trojan defensive line, as well as the team’s O line, is anchored by senior Ryan Green (6-3, 245) who brings a lot of experience to the position. The Trojans also have at least one starter back at the second and third levels of the defense.
“Their defense pursues the ball and their corners are very physical,” Walker said. “This will be their first home game of the year and they will be playing with a lot of emotion. This is our first away game of the year so we will have to mentally be ready for a tough and emotional game.”
The Swamp Foxes are coming off a 21-6 victory over Woodland last week.
Woodland has some top-notch talent this season, including offensive lineman/defensive end Michael Barnett, who has verbally committed to play at Florida State. Walker is pleased with the way his team handled the challenge.
“We knew Barnett was going to make his plays so we just tried to contain him as best we could,” Walker said. “For the most part I’m happy with the way we were able to keep him out of the backfield tonight. It was a group effort but Devin Parker lined up against him for much of the night and I think he did a decent job. Overall we came in prepared and we did a good job tonight.”
Ashley Ridge quarterback Steven Duncan completed 13 of 20 pass attempts for 122 yards. CT Frederick, with three receptions for 54 yards, and Matt Linton, with five receptions for 41 yards, led all receivers in the game.
Both Tyler Garland and Chris Jones rushed for approximately 100 yards and a TD.
Junior linebacker Brandon Brown led the Swamp Foxes’ defense, making 13 tackles including a sack. Tyquan Tucker and Dylan Mariucci had seven tackles each and Malik Middleton and Alex Deloach both had a sack.
Tucker, Gilliam and Jamal King-Smalls all had an interception and Tucker returned his for a TD.
Kickoff Friday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
