Green Wave volleyball team out to make some noise

Roger Lee/Journal Scene Dani Halajckik is one of three starters returning to the Green Wave volleyball team this season.

Green Wave volleyball coach Rachel Page is expecting her team to improve on last year’s performance.

The Green Wave had a season of adjustment in 2013 as longtime Summerville coach Teresa Kendle left the school to take a position at Hanahan and Page, a former Green Wave player and assistant coach, took control of the team. This year, the team is used to Page’s system and looking to make some noise.

“We show a lot of promise,” Page said. “We are very young, but the girls have jelled quickly and they play well together. We have good depth at every position and I think we can do better this year.”

Summerville placed fourth in Region 8-AAAA last season and had a tough draw for the playoffs. The Wave was eliminated in the first round by Wando, which went on to claim the Lower State Championship.

This year Summerville returns starters Dani Halajcsik, Sara Windham and Rebekah DeToma, plus varsity letterman Alexis Williams.

Windham is the team’s primary setter and DeToma is the Libero. Halajcsik is an outside hitter.

Freshman Elizabeth Yohe is the Wave’s other starting outside hitter. Junior Reeves Goettee and sophomore Kylea King anchor the middle of the front row. Williams and junior Delaney Goodwin are also likely to see a lot of action this season.

“We can use Delaney as a setter, which will allow us to run a 6-2,” Page said. “That should make us stronger. Our defensive players coming back have grown tremendously and we have some talent coming up from the JV. Everyone has worked hard this summer and they do a great job playing out of system ball. They are fun to watch because they play good defense and know how to keep the ball in play.”

Others expected to vie for playing time include sophomores Jordan Juan, Daphne Buzard and Payton Stokes and junior Brianna Michaud.

Summerville will face Baptist Hill its home opener at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 3.
