Pinewood hosted Northwood Academy on Friday night in front of a packed home crowd for their second game of the season.
Coming off a huge win against First Baptist last week, Pinewood was determined to take charge over the Chargers.
It was not to be for Pinewood and even though the Panthers scored first, they came up short, losing 27-7.
“It was a hard fought, emotional game,” Pinewood coach Michael Wright said. “I am proud of the team for their efforts.”
Pinewood’s opening drive had several penalties from both sides but the Panthers got things moving when Andrew Latham ran for 28 yards.
Quarterback Lewis Vaughn connected with Michael Wright Jr. with a 27-yard pass that put the Panthers just short of the goal line. Their only touchdown of the game came from a keeper from Vaughn. Ryan Huiet’s PAT kick was good.
Northwood Academy answered on the next play. The Chargers’ Trevor McNeil returned the kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. A two-point conversion attempt was broken up and the Panthers held a 7-6 lead.
The second quarter saw inconsistent play from both teams. There were several turnovers and interceptions made by both teams. The score at the half remained in Pinewood’s favor 7-6.
The closest either team came to scoring in the third quarter was when Northwood attempted a 31-yard field goal that was no good.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Chargers quarterback Will Lloyd did find his groove. On a third-and-goal, Lloyd connected with a receiver for a touchdown pass to give Northwood its first lead of the game. The PAT was good and for a13-7 Chargers’ lead.
Pinewood took over with 11:51 left in the final quarter and could not find their way through the Northwood defense. The Chargers took over and Lloyd threw to Douglas Dwight for a touchdown to take a 20-7 lead.
On the next drive Pinewood made some progress with Vaughn throwing for 32 yards to Michael Wright Jr. but that was all the Panthers could muster. With 4:38 left in the game the Chargers stripped the ball from a ball carrier to gain possession.
Trevor McNeil then ran for 51 yards to score.
Vaughn completed 11 of 24 pass attempts for 134 yards. Andrew Latham led the defense with 10 tackles and Leslie Redden was the leading rusher.
Pinewood plays at home against Laurence Manning Academy on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
