Former North Charleston Mayor and longtime Realtor John Bourne Jr. has been recognized by the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors as their Commercial Realtor of the Year. The award is presented by the Association’s Commercial Division in recognition of a member’s local, state and national contributions to the community, real estate industry and Realtor organization. Bourne has been a Realtor for more than 45 years and is broker-in-charge of John E. Bourne, Inc., located in the Park Circle area of North Charleston. He was recognized in large part based on his involvement in the legislative process. Though he has not held public office in more than 15 years, Bourne has remained a constant advocate for private property rights and has played and integral role in the Association’s efforts to ensure responsible growth for the entire Charleston region. According to Mike Rose, president of the CTAR Commercial Investment Division, “John is undoubtedly one of our community’s strongest advocates. He’s spent his whole life working to make Charleston a better place and his passion for protecting our quality of life is contagious!” Bourne joined the association in 1950 when he started out as an agent with the R. Harry Morris Company. In 1963, he became broker-in-charge of John E. Bourne Inc. specializing in real estate and insurance. In addition to his life as a Realtor, Bourne has served on the Charleston County Council, the state Senate and as the first Mayor of North Charleston. “I believe Realtor are the salt of the earth,” said Bourne. “This is a tremendous honor, and I have an enormous amount of respect for the industry and the membership of our local association.” With nearly 4,500 members, CTAR’s mission is to promote the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, education and technology, and to ensure that its members are the primary source for real estate services in the South Carolina Low Country. Only those who are members of the Association of Realtors® and its parent organizations are called Realtor. To learn more, visit www.CharlestonRealtors.com.
