There’s a new opportunity to have your photographic work judged and hung in Summerville Town Hall. The Cultural Arts Alliance of Greater Summerville (CAA) is mounting its second Fine Art Juried Photography Show and Sale next month. This will be the CAA’s fourth exhibition in its revolving schedule. Painting, photography and quilts have been hanging in turn since the exhibitions began last year. The show is open to photographic artists, over 18 who reside in Dorchester County, including those within Summerville Town limits and/or those in adjoining communities. This show opens Thursday, November 17, and runs until Friday, February 10, 2012.

          All submitted work must be original, exhibition ready, properly framed and wired to hang. Entries will be accepted November 11 and 12. Details, including all requirements, drop off and pick up dates and times are included in the artist’s contracts, which are available at Art Central, 130 Central Ave. (Short Central) and The Finishing Touch, corner of West Richardson and S.           Since the first photography show brought out even more entrants than other media in previous shows, alliance members opted to have another such exhibit to enhance Town Hall walls over the holidays. Photographs can be created in color, black and white, traditional film or digital formats. Hundreds of people have visited Town Hall during the opening receptions of each show. During the duration of the shows, the public is encouraged to visit Town Hall and enjoy the various works of art.

Many organizations have helped promote these art shows, including the Arts, Business and Civic Coalition (ABCC). The ABCC publicized the current Quilt Show during its participation at the recent Charleston Regional Arts OPEN event, which included my contact information as a CAA board member. That exposure resulted in many phone calls to me for information as well as visits to Town Hall. I was present twice when a group came from Goose Creek and the West Ashley area, respectively, all of whom had learned of the Quilt Show through the ABCC’s efforts. The visitors were enthusiastic about the quilts on display and wanted more information about the other shows.

          This is a win-win situation for all concerned. Town Hall is bedecked with original fine art in a variety of media, local artists get exhibited in a handsome venue, and residents and visitors alike can imbibe in our town’s artistic abilities. One day, with the combined efforts of the ABCC, the CAA and its members, along with the general public, we will have a Civic Center befitting the needs of Summerville. It will be a place not only for exhibition of arts, but musical and theatrical performances, as well as a venue for social, civic, business gatherings and education. Arts organizations will help fill the center with programming and combine with the other groups to help make it a profitable venture.

          There’s enough talent and ingenuity in this town to not only fill Town Hall, but also that much hoped-for Civic Center. The possibilities of the upcoming Photo Show are but a further step in the possibilities of exposure.
