Inklings: Quilt Show credits

I’ve always believed that whenever you ask “please” you remember to say “thank you.”

This is most appropriate for the recent Quilt Show at Town Hall put on by the Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA) of Greater Summerville. This group was formed several years ago with the mission of coordinating and promoting local cultural arts. Jane Orenstein came up with the idea of a revolving art show at our beautiful Town Hall Annex, to show just what a talented cultural arts town we have. To date the group has sponsored juried painting, photography and quilting shows, earning community kudos.

A professional quality hanging system was installed by volunteers and funded by the Town’s Accommodations Tax. This system can be used to hang shows far into the future. A special nod goes to Bonnie Van Etten, executive assistant at Town Hall, who always makes our tasks easier.

All the workers in all the shows have volunteered their talents and “Thanks” are well deserved. Graphic artist Paul Bailey designed display ads and other publicity for the Quilt Show. Local businesses, Art Central, People, Places & Quilts and The Finishing Touch distributed contracts and publicity material. Heather Leiterman of The Finishing Touch helped hang the show as did Bob Orenstein. Diane Frankenberger of People, Places & Quilts sponsored the show in a variety of ways, as well as answering dozens of our questions. Susan Lee prepared the delightful refreshments. Jane Orenstein added her special touch here as well.

Educator Meg Skow, our secretary-treasurer and “person-who-can-do-everything” was on hand to help with whatever was needed, including the hanging. John Lindroth handled our website. Larry Barnfield head of District Two’s Fine Art Department helped with arrangements, including securing professional judges.

Banjoist Pat Watts lent his musical talents in just the right mix of selections to go with quilts. Irene Carr, Ellen Hyatt, Bev Long, and Ellen McNeal of the Summerville Writers Guild (SWG), served as hostesses during the evening. They and other members of the Guild wrote special quilt poems which will be displayed for the duration of the show, which lasts until September 23. Those poems were personally mounted and framed by SWG member Dora Ann Reaves.

And last – but certainly not least – was the public response. Sandy Gartenbush called the show “awesome” and raved about all the hard work shown in the quilts. Annette Bertolani, who said she is not a quilter, but a “quilt admirer” was most taken with the 911 Memorial Quilt.

Virginia Williamson, who is a quilter with the Summerville Baptist Church’s quilters, really enjoyed the fashion display of jackets, vests and purses. Robin Lemelin agreed.

Summerville’s First Lady Margaret Collins called the display “absolutely wonderful.” School Board member Fran Townsend said it was “fantastic!” Monica Shows, Flowertown Players board member (and director of the recent – and most successful – “Café Noir” dinner theater productions) said she “loved the show. It was gorgeous.”

If I’ve forgotten to mention any of the myriad of folks who contributed to the Quilt Show, I apologize. Everyone who helped is appreciated. And everyone who helped said they did it for the same reason Diane Frankenberger expressed: “We live in a wonderful town with wonderfully talented people. And we want people to come support it, enjoy it and share it!
