Horse damages patrol car

A Dorchester County sheriff’s deputy was trying to corral a loose horse Sept. 25 when the animal, spooked by a passing car, struck the deputy’s patrol car with its hindquarters, a report shows.

The deputy was on routine patrol on Shortcut Road, two miles south of Harleyville, when he spotted the horse in the middle of the roadway, the report says. He activated his emergency lights and called animal control.

While waiting for animal control to arrive, the deputy crowded the horse to the side of the road to let another vehicle pass. That’s when the horse turned around and struck the patrol car, causing a small dent in the driver’s door, the report says.

It’s unclear from the report if the horse kicked the cruiser or sat on it, but nevertheless, the car sustained an estimated $300 in damage.

Animal shelter donations stolen from pet store

Donations to benefit the Frances R. Willis SPCA animal shelter were swiped from a Bacons Bridge Road pet store twice in two weeks, according to reports from Summerville police and an SPCA board member.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Summerville man Oct. 1 and charged him with petty larceny after he allegedly took $10 from a donation box inside the store, the police report says.

The donations were intended for the animal shelter, an SPCA board member told the Journal Scene.

The store manager followed the man to a parking lot across from the store where they met the reporting officer. The suspect denied stealing the money, the report says.

The officer asked the man how much cash he had on him. The man said he had $10, the report says.

According to the store manager, it was the same suspect who stole from the store the previous week. The SPCA board member confirmed the first theft also involved donations.

The police report doesn’t indicate if the suspect was charged in connection with the first alleged theft. He was placed on trespass notice and later taken to jail, the report says.

The $10 was placed into evidence.

$15,000 in shoes reported stolen

A 25-year-old Summerville man who was storing 180 pairs of sneakers in his mother’s garage reported them stolen last month, a police report shows.

The man said the shoes, worth an estimated $15,000, were taken sometime between Sept. 6 and 27. He suspects they were stolen by a 19-year-old man who lived in the home for 17 months and may still have a key, the report says.

The man said the 19-year-old is attempting to sell the shoes on eBay. The 19-year-old denied knowledge of the theft and said he didn’t have a key. The shoes didn’t turn up when police searched his apartment, the report says.

The reporting officer noted that there was insufficient probable cause to arrest the 19-year-old. He advised the victim on the procedures for obtaining a courtesy summons — a requirement for any non-law enforcement personnel to pursue misdemeanor charges against someone else — should the shoes appear on eBay, the report shows.
