Editor’s Note: The following are highlights from a year’s worth of incident reports. Suspect describes self Caught trying to break into her car, a Summerville teen reportedly told a nail salon employee in January: “Put your (expletive) back in the building, old lady. Call the cops. Tell them I got on khakis and a white shirt.” Indeed, that’s what he was wearing, according to a Summerville police report. The nail salon employee took his advice and called police. Officers searched the area and found the teen as well as another suspect. Police returned the suspects to the scene, where they were positively identified. The nail salon employee chose not to press charges because there was no damage to her car, the report said. Crime of competition? The former employee of a popular breakfast restaurant chain was accused of stealing four of its daily special menus April 6 in a maneuver for the upper hand, Summerville police reported. A woman who worked for the restaurant told police that the former employee was employed at a different franchise and she took the menus “to gain an advantage over her former employer.” The complainant said she wanted to pursue charges against the former employee. So long, bongs Goodwill weeded out 31 glass drug pipes that were donated April 16 and turned them over to police. The pipes were found, along with two BB guns and three knives in the Bacons Bridge Road resale store’s donation drop box, Summerville police reported. A store employee asked police to destroy the pipes, which were rejected because they “could be used to consume illegal narcotics,” the report said. Stolen frog ‘leaves note’ After noticing her green ceramic frog was missing from her front yard June 13, a Ladson woman found a note explaining how the frog had gone on vacation and would write, the sheriff’s office reported. The woman knew something was wrong when she saw that the frog was no longer in its usual spot — atop a bicycle. She phoned the sheriff’s office and gave the reporting deputy the letter as evidence. She suspected children in the neighborhood were to blame. Counting to ‘Captain’ When you are undergoing a field sobriety test and the police officer asks you to count out loud, name-checking a liquor brand might not be the best idea. That’s what a man did July 26 when he was pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving, according to a Summerville police report. The 25-year-old driver counted to “1,000 and nine,” but instead of saying, “1,000 and 10,” next, he reportedly said, “Captain Morgan.” He soon found himself in custody for driving under the influence. Mustard tops off burglary After stealing $3,000 worth of guns and power tools from a Branchville home Dec. 16, a burglar used mustard from the refrigerator to spell out “sorry” on the kitchen counter, according to a Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office report. The victim found the seemingly insincere message after returning to his house in the northwestern part of the county and realizing the items were missing. The doors to both the house and garage kicked in, the report said. Contact David Berman at 873-9424 ext. 214 or dberman@journalscene.com
