Bad loans
An employee of a loan company reported that she recently made five loans that she later discovered had been made based on fraudulent information. She said a sixth suspect attempted to obtain a loan but by that time the employee knew the information was false.
She said the five loans she had approved were linked together with the same individuals. They obtained their loan using fraudulent Social Security income forms; fraudulent pay stubs from a non-existent company, and used each other as references as well. When the loan officer called the number listed for the company, the same person answered and answered questions from the loan company. The company is now out several thousand dollars with these loans.
The case is under investigation
Foul balls
An Eastover man learned the hard way it doesn’t pay to play ball with inmates.
A deputy on patrol near Lieber Correctional Institution saw an unknown subject standing near the fence that surrounds the facility. He then watched as the subject threw two items the size of baseballs over the fence.
The officer called in what he had seen and called for a back up. Soon they found the subject hiding in some bushes and ordered him to come out, which he did. The subject admitted to throwing eight packages containing loose tobacco, which is contraband, into the prison property. He was arrested and transported to Dorchester County Detention Center.
Armed robbery
A Summerville woman reported that she was leaving her residence and walking out to her car when an unknown black male wearing black pants and a black hooded sweatshirt came from behind her mobile home and approached her. She said he tried to pull her purse off her arm but she held on and said, “No.” He then pulled out a long gun, possibly a shotgun, and threatened to kill her. She said when that happened she let the purse go and he fled the area. She said she last saw the subject headed toward the Green Hurst area on foot.
According to the victim, the purse contained nearly $500 cash, her driver’s license and her credit cards. She could not describe the subject because of the hood but said his hair might have twists in it.
A K-9 unit arrived and tried to track the subject, but after three tries could not get a track.
Creep alert
Officers responded to calls about a suspicious person loitering in the Summer Haven subdivision near a house on Towering Pines Drive. Officers found the subject and after running a warrants check on him which came back clean, told him to leave the subdivision and go home.
Later in the evening, an officer responded to another call about the same situation. This time, the complainant said the subject had been standing between houses in the pouring rain, then walked up to the complainant’s house and asked for a glass of ice water. A short time later, he went to another house and asked for a glass of ice water.
When the officer arrived in the neighborhood, he saw the subject try to hide. After the officer passed, he went out to Lincolnville Road, and then doubled back into the subdivision through another entrance.
The officer found the subject a little while later, back on Towering Pines Road. Upon interview, the subject said he was a registered sex offender. He also could not give a valid reason for being in the area three hours after being ordered out of the area, nor could he explain why he was standing between houses.
The officer arrested the subject for loitering and prowling and transported him to the Dorchester County Detention Center.
