A 17-year-old Summerville woman is charged with child neglect after authorities say she deliberately tried to shove an object down her child’s throat as she visited the child in a room at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital.

Chevonne Deandra Younginer was arrested Friday, Feb. 3, charged with a count of child neglect.

According to MUSC authorities, the child was in the hospital because of a number of life-threatening medical episodes. Medical staff had placed the child in view of a video camera so that they could record any unusual medical episodes while the child was unattended.

At some point Friday, medical staff were alerted that the child was in distress, apparently choking, and Younginer was holding the child. Staff held the child face down and gave the child several blows to the back, which caused the child to vomit, dislodging an object described as being about the size of a cotton ball.

Staff reviewed video of the incident, which shows the mother taking a piece of material from a stuffed toy and shoving it into the child’s mouth. A few moments later, she shoves it farther back into the child’s mouth and walks away.

Younginer was arrested and charged with a count of child neglect; Berkeley County DSS officials took the child into protective custody.
