The Summerville Community Orchestra (SCO) will perform an outdoor concert in the amphitheatre of The Ponds on Sunday, April 13, 2008. The hour-long performance will begin at 6:30 PM. The Ponds is located slightly over 2 miles past Summerville High School on Hwy 17A South. Enter from US 17A on Village Ponds Drive and take the first left into the amphitheatre parking.
Greenwood Communities and Resorts has generously supported the SCO and has made this live concert free to the public. Guests are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets to the lawn at the amphitheatre to enjoy the performance. Concessions will also be available.
The theme of the program, “Discover the Ponds” was inspired by the amphitheatre’s beautiful setting next to one of the many ponds on the property. The concert was intentionally planned for sunset so the audience will enjoy the music as the lights gradually come on around the pond. The rain date is April 27.
The SCO will present the inaugural event at the new amphitheatre. The community enjoyed the orchestra’s last outdoor concert, Pops in the Park, in October. Always well attended, the audience appreciated the lively music in the impeccably-maintained Azalea Park. The music for the concert at The Ponds will include Gershwin, Brahms, Strauss, Bizet and other favorites.
The Musical Director of the SCO is Alexander Agrest of Charleston. The orchestra is made up of volunteer musicians, some professional, some amateurs, who rehearse every Monday night at Alston Middle School.
The mission of the SCO is to enrich the cultural climate of the Summerville community and surrounding areas by entertaining and educating audiences with performances; and to provide opportunities for volunteer musicians to play for the pure joy of it.
