Short Central was crowded with art lovers enjoying a spring evening during an art walk in April.

Art and music fill downtown

DREAMfest, a gathering of exhibits, entertainment, refreshments and featured artists, will begin in downtown Summerville on third Thursdays each month from May to September, 5 to 8 p.m.

The nights will host an Art Walk featuring local artists on Short Central and a free community concert as part of the 2008 concert series on Hutchinson Square.

Shops and restaurants will be open until 8 p.m. and civic organizations will be encouraged to have booths around the downtown district.

The first concert featuring the Heritage Aire Celtic Ensemble will be held on Thursday, May 15 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  Bring a beach blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy!

The Heritage Aire Celtic Ensemble made its debut performance with the Heritage of America Concert Band during the “Holidays, Past and Present” concert series in December, 2004.

Under the direction of TSgt Sherry Burt, Heritage Aire blends a contemporary musical approach with traditional Celtic music style to create a stunning musical tapestry. The members of Heritage Aire perform on traditional instruments such as the Irish flute, tin whistles, button accordion, and bodhran.

They also employ modern instruments like the acoustic guitar and clarinet to achieve their unique sound. Heritage Aire celebrates America’s great cultural diversity by performing concerts in communities and schools throughout a six state region.

The ensemble also provides entertainment and musical support for military protocol events. No alcoholic beverages permitted. Refreshments will be sponsored by First Citizens Bank.

Other dates include: June 19, July 17, August 21 and September 18.

So, shop, dine and visit in downtown Summerville and enjoy fine art and music while you do it! Call the DREAM office at 821-7260 or Alix Kassing, Art Walk Chair, at 832-6709 if you would like to host a community booth, sponsor refreshments for a future month, participate in the Art Walk or if you would like more information in general.
