For more than a decade, local art lovers and tourists alike have furnished their homes with artwork from a quaint shop in downtown Summerville.
To celebrate its 11th anniversary, Art Central is holding a gala Oct. 15. The 11 artists, one jeweler and one photographer who exhibit at the gallery are inviting the public to attend and see newly unveiled work and ask the artists questions.
In line with the gala’s theme, “Pushing the Limits,” the artists have expanded repertoires, said Helen Beacham, one of the artists.
“Several of us have decided to do something out of our comfort zones,” Beacham said. “People will see things from us that they’ve never seen before.”
Beacham, who will showcase a number of contemporary and modern pieces, says the anniversary is notable because it signifies the growth in both the work and personal lives of each of the artists.
“We bounce ideas off each other and grow together,” Beacham said. “We’re always motivating each other to be better.”
Artist Yvonne Rousseau says people who’ve frequented Art Central before will notice that the work exhibited at the gala is different from what they’ve seen in the past.
“You can see the evolution of the work of the artists as far as their skills, techniques and styles,” Rousseau said.
Beacham says that what makes Art Central special is that its artists seek to capture the community through their work.
“People are able to walk up to some of the paintings and recognize the very places they’re used to seeing,” Beacham said. “There’s a personal touch to all of the work.”
Rousseau says she enjoys interacting with those who visit Art Central and that she hopes people leave the store with a greater appreciation for art than they had when they entered.
The anniversary gala will be held from 5-8 p.m. at 130 Short Central Avenue in downtown Summerville. Dress is business casual attire. Hors d’oeuvres and light refreshments will be served.
