“A lovely light” by Kathleen Wiley

Kathleen Wiley is Art Central Gallery’s May” Artist of the Month” with her series “Skyscapes & Reflections”.  She says “I really feel the wide open Lowcountry is the perfect landscape to feature ‘the sky’ in paintings. I have always liked dramatic images and my new series features a wide range of skies, from ones with lightning bolts, to serene lovely sunsets. The landscape is still there, but the sky is the focal point. I also love the reflective quality of water.  In my series you’ll see everything from a landscape reflected into water, to a nature still life of grasses surrounded by water… rippled and reflecting the trees and sky in the swamp. Some of the paintings will have wildlife in them, which I’m known for, but you just may have to look a little harder to see it!”

Inspiration for these pieces comes from Wiley’s appreciation of nature. Most people are familiar with her realistic wildlife, but her home is filled with her large landscapes of waterfalls and woodland scenes.   She says “I recently visited Francis Beidler Forest where the walk through the swamp inspired the reflections in my series. I am always aware of nature in my surroundings… its colors, the sense of tranquility, the movements and even the smells. I am staying true to who I am by continuing to paint Nature’s many images.”

Wiley moved to South Carolina about 5 years ago from New York State because she and her husband fell in love with the area.  They say they love the slower, more relaxed lifestyle.  Kathleen also enjoys gardening, especially cottage style perennial beds overflowing with blooms and the wildlife it attracts.  It’s evident that, no matter what she chooses to focus on, she does it creatively and with Nature in mind.
