Helen K. Beacham is the featured artist for January with her latest series of paintings. Ms. Beacham calls this series “Returning to My Roots” (a nod to the past)…
She says “I started out as a watercolor painter back in 1981 and evolved into painting with acrylics on canvas about a year or so ago. For this new series, although I painted with acrylics, I diluted the paint with medium and water to accomplish the watery effects of a watercolor glaze, which takes me back to my roots. The canvas is then varnished to further protect it. Another nod to my past involves my subject matter: I LOVE old doors, old houses, old gates (that’s why we chose to put down OUR roots in historic Summerville). This series, where I incorporate strong lights and shadows, lends itself beautifully to being done in black and white.”
After 11 years, Victoria Platt Ellis leaves Art Central Gallery on December 31 to focus on her downtown Charleston gallery called Ellis-Nicholson Gallery on Broad Street. Ms. Ellis was a founding member of Art Central and well-known and loved in the Summerville community. Delaine Walters, a native of St. George, SC, joins Art Central effective January 1. Ms. Walters has spent all her life in one creative endeavor or another including floral design and owning an art & craft store. She paints in watercolors, pen & ink, acrylics, oils, and mixed media.
