Art Central Gallery’s got a lot of talent, with most of it represented through the use of “paint” to reflect what the artists see in their mind’s eye. But there’s one talented member that creates through the lens of her camera. June Peel Sullivan is the featured Artist of the Month throughout May and she’s focusing on what many of us in the Lowcountry love about living here…the beach!
Q: June, tell me about the title of your May series, "Let's Go to the Beach!”
JPS: At this time of year, when the blossoms are responding to the warm spring air, people in the Lowcountry start to think about going to our wonderful local beaches. I’ll feature some of that very natural beauty of our beaches for the May window at Art Central Gallery!
Q: Do you often get suggestions from customers for photos you should take? If so, what's the most commonly requested scene?
JPS: I like to participate in at least two shows a year such as the Flowertown Festival, just to get the input from those who come into my booth. Many people do ask for particular places or scenes, and I keep a list of those requests to see what I need to take before the next show. No matter how I try, there is always something someone wants that I haven’t taken yet!
Q: Do you always have your camera with you? Do you carry a smaller one for your purse?? What's your favorite kind of camera?
JPS: Well… a good portion of the time, I do have my camera bag with me. Yes, a whole bag so that I can have my full array of lenses. I have a small camera that I used when I was historian for my professional association, but generally I lug my camera bag if I’m going somewhere that I think will be photo-worthy.
I prefer Canon cameras and lenses. I don’t enjoy sitting still with a tripod very much and don’t do studio or wedding photography. Therefore, I tend not to use format cameras. I take very few shots with people in them. Therefore, I like a nice portable camera with a fast shutter. Right now, I prefer to use my Canon Elan 7e and my variety of Canon lenses. I really like the lenses that Canon makes. I believe they give the best image stabilization on the market while giving clear, crisp images.
Q: When did you first start in photography? What prompted it?
JPS: I’ve always enjoyed taking photographs and don’t really know when I started. However, I only started doing it professionally in 2000. I retired from state service that year and found that I was too young and had too much energy to just be “retired”. I had friends who had seen my work and encouraged me to jury into a gallery in Charleston. No one in my family was a professional photographer. At one time on my staff, I was lucky enough to have a professional photographer, who was always happy to entertain my questions!
