The Summerville Preservation Society continues its heritage program series on Thursday, Nov, 15 at 4 p.m. at the Old Town Hall, 201 W. Carolina Ave. The focus of this meeting will be on the early inns of Summerville.
Panelists will include George Seago, owner of the Wisteria Inn property and Dottie Barnett who lives nearby and knew many of the guests who patronized the Wisteria, Carolina and Squirrel Inns. Michaelle Rogers owns the old Candlelite Inn and will share her knowledge of the Halcyon Inn which was owned by the Dion family. Chris Ohm, Director of the Summerville Dorchester Museum, will provide a map showing the locations of the early inns and taverns and discuss his knowledge based on personal research.
Heyward Hutson, a descendant Brown’s Hotel owners and operators Isaac T. and Christianna Brown, will offer information based on his genealogical research. He will also present information on the Halcyon Inn provided by Katrina Hadley of Somerville, Massachusetts. Hadley is a descendant of the early owners of the Halcyon Inn.
The Society also will unveil a new painting by local artist Mary Ann Bridgman. It is the seventh in the series of historical reproductions that capture the history of Summerville on canvas. The subject of the painting will be revealed at the meeting as the painting is unveiled. Bridgman will be present to personalize the prints which will be on sale at the meeting.
“This is the first print to be published by the Society in 15 years and is definitely special,” Society President Heyward Hutson said Monday.
Prints will sell for $25 and $20, depending on the size. Postcards will be $1 each.
“All make excellent Christmas gifts,” Hutson said.
The meeting and reception are open to the public.
