Leslie Vicary portrays Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald in the South of Broadway Theatre Company production The Last Flapper.

Summerville actress Leslie Vicary will use her talents to bring the glorious character of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald to life this weekend.

Vicary, who had head-turning performances during past Flowertown Players’ productions such as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Streetcar Named Desire, will star in the one-woman show The Last Flapper at Park Circle’s South of Broadway Theatre Company Jan. 20-22.

The show delves into the fascinating yet conflicted life of Fitzgerald, jazz-age party girl and wife to author F. Scott Fitzgerald.

“Her story is fascinating and I think a lot of people don’t know it,” Vicary said. “She had such a glamorous life. Between her experiences as a southern bell and her crazy antics there is just so much material there.”

The production provides a glimpse into Zelda’s tumultuous relationship with her husband, which saw both good times and bad. It also addresses her own struggle to succeed as an artist and how being institutionalized in a sanitarium impacted that quest.

The role requires significant range, which makes Vicary a wise choice. During the first full dress rehearsal for the production on Wednesday, the Summerville actress did a fantastic job taking the audience on a roller-coaster ride into the mind and personality of the iconic figure.

“Leslie is doing a fabulous job with the role on so many different levels,” Director Mark Gorman said. “She really brings out the best in Zelda without being afraid to show us her diversity.”

The Last Flapper opens Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be performances at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 and 3 p.m. Jan. 22. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students age 18 and younger with an ID.

The South of Broadway Theatre Company opened its doors at 1080 East Montague Avenue in North Charleston in 2004. The company offers a variety of productions annually, some of which are for mature audiences and some that are geared for younger theatre lovers. It also offers acting and singing lessons.

“It's a small, black-box theatre near Park Circle that is much closer for Summerville residents than downtown Charleston theatres,” Vicary said.
