DD2 teachers secure more than $41,000 in grants

Dorchester District 2 teachers who received grants for school programs were recognized at a recent school board meeting.

Sixteen teachers from Dorchester School District 2 have received $41,700 in grants from the Education Improvement Act for the 2008-09 school year. Each teacher was recognized at the Sept. 8 School Board meeting.

The winners were:

Valerie Bassett and Deb Nelson from Reeves Elementary School, who were awarded $6,000 for the Reeves Readers Rock! Program; Tamara Bertram from Summerville Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for the Curl Up with a Good (Nonfiction) Book program; Christon Carroll from Newington Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for the How to Build a Hero program; Nancy Cockfiled from Summerville Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for The Nonfiction Convention program; Elizabeth Crotty from Summerville Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for the Sowing Young Scientists program; Jane Daffin from Newington Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for the S.C. Time Travelers program; Joy Derrick from Summerville Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for the Measurement Mania program; Ellen Lumpkin of Summerville Elementary School was awarded $1,700 for the Creating a Climate of Kindness program; Yolanda Moore of Summerville Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for the Summerville Heroes program; William Moylan from Fort Dorchester Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for a Technology-Infused Speech/Language Therapy Instruction program; Amy Patte from Summerville Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for the Fluency Friends program; Diane Paulin from Windsor Elementary School was awarded $6,000 for the Plug in to Plug Up program; Shannon Phillips with Summerville Elementary School was awarded $6,000 for the Math Survivor program; Debra Polk with Newington Elementary School, who was awarded $2,000 for the TASK: Take Along Science Kits program and Rene Webster with Newington Elementary School was awarded $2,000 for the History from the Heart program.
