On Sept. 22, the Gavalas Kolanko Foundation (GKF) awarded 7 scholarships to students with disabilities at the College of Charleston, including Summerville resident Emily Lyles.
President George Benson, Mayor Riley, GKF sponsors and supporters were present at the reception at Alumni Hall to applaud the scholarship recipients.
The other six scholarship recipients are Rachel Beahm, Alex Jackson, Steven Melcher, Alan Sea, Christine Trahan, and Ryan Watkins. Since its inception, the GKF has awarded 30 scholarships to special needs students at the CofC.
The GKF is a public charity established to help students with disabilities reach their secondary educational goals. By awarding scholarship assistance to College of Charleston students each year, the GKF helps make “Education Within Reach” for South Carolina undergraduates pursuing a college education despite physical limitations. To qualify, a student must be hearing, sight, or physically impaired.
Nicholas B. Gavalas and Dr. Ronald Kolanko established the GKF in 1999 after becoming aware of the costly requirements for students with disabilities wishing to attend college.
The GKF’s largest fundraiser is the James Island Connector Run. The 10th Annual run will take place on November 1st, Students with Disabilities Day, as proclaimed by Mayor Joe Riley, Jr. To register for the race visit www.jamesislandconnectorrun.com.
