Dorchester School District Two recently celebrated academic excellence with Academic Awards ceremonies at Ashley Ridge High, Summerville High and Fort Dorchester High.
Students were awarded academic letters and medals during these ceremonies in recognition of outstanding academic performance during the 2007-2008 school year.
Since its beginnings in 1995, the Academic Awards Program has honored more than 7,000 students for outstanding academic achievement.
A total of 398 sophomores, juniors and seniors from the district high schools qualified for this year’s award.
To receive the award, students must have an academic average for the previous school year of 90 or above. Among the award recipients, 53 students received the Board of Trustees Award indicating they achieved an A (93 or above) in every subject.
Each of the honored students received a medal, designed and struck especially for the Academic Awards Program. Seniors received a gold medal, juniors a silver medal and sophomores a bronze medal. In addition, students also received an academic letter for his or her respective school.
In its fifteenth year, this program was established to recognize the achievement of high school students and has been supported and funded by members of the business community. In addition to funding the awards program, business sponsors also provided a scholarship for a senior receiving an Academic Award from Fort Dorchester High and from Summerville High. MeadWestvaco sponsored the two scholarships of $1,000 each. Fort Dorchester High School senior Jocelyn Paonita and Summerville High School senior Jason Hughes Jarrell were named the 2009 Academic Awards scholarship recipients during the ceremonies. All seniors receiving an academic award have the opportunity to apply for these scholarships.
