Summerville High School freshmen Shelby and Taylor Willoughby are two of the six 2009 Merrill Lynch Young Entrepreneur Award winners.

The South Carolina Council on Economic Education (SCCEE) and Merrill Lynch established the award in 2004 to recognize outstanding students for their accomplishments in entrepreneurship. The twin sisters will be interviewed on the “ETV Stock Market Program,” which is broadcast on closed circuit to schools statewide. The Willoughby twins also will be honored next May at SCCEE’s annual awards luncheon and receive a $200 cash prize.

Out of their backyard, the twin sisters buy and sell chicken, duck and quail eggs. In addition, they raise bantam chickens to show at local competitions, and auction, sell or trade their fowl at local small animal auctions and shows.

“The Merrill Lynch Young Entrepreneur award recognizes young people who have met the challenge of starting their own businesses and are willing to share their knowledge and experience with other students,” said Helen Meyers, SCCEE president. “Shelby and Taylor and the other winners have great ideas and lots of energy.”
