Charlie Young talks to Beech Hill kindergarteners about his trip to Antarctica.
As students snuggled in their sweaters and hoodies on the coldest day in decades, a very special guest talked with them about one of the coldest places on earth, Antarctica.

Beech Hill kindergarteners in Segina Canty’s class heard first hand what it was like at the South Pole. Charlie Young, the grandfather of Beech Hill student Mason Baird, showed students pictures from his November 2007 trip to Antarctica.

The students learned that visitors to Antarctica have to take their own food and supplies because, as Young emphasized, there are no restaurants or stores there. The children asked questions about the oceans freezing and air strips on the ice.

Young is retired from the FAA and is now a consultant for building new airstrips and air traffic control systems. He is the father-in-law of Beech Hill Assistant Principal Wally Baird.
