The rain-soaked fairgrounds at the Exchange Park in Ladson could not dampen the enthusiasm of the nearly 200 Cub Scouts who attended the Swampfox Ladson Day Camp.

From June 15-19, rising first- through fifth-graders from Dorchester and Berkeley counties took part in the camp, which offered seasoned Cub Scouts, as well as those who are new to the organization, a chance to meet fellow Scouts, make new friends and master several skills.

The theme of this year’s camp was “Cubs on the Move,” which described the variety of subjects the Scouts learned about and activities they participated in. However, an onlooker may have thought the theme was chosen because it reflected the constant motion of each of the campers who eagerly bounced from one activity to the next.

Although the camp lasted only one week, the Scouts participated in what seemed like a month’s worth of events.

They worked in small groups to build wooden birdhouses at the woodshop station, made fleur-de-lys at the arts and crafts station and played baseball and flag football on the fields outside.

Among the most popular activities were three shooting sports, which the Scouts rarely have an opportunity to take part in because they are restricted during the year.

Under the careful watch of volunteers, the boys shot BB guns, launched paintballs using wrist rockets and unleashed multi-colored arrows at targets at the archery station.

On the final day of camp, the Scouts’ parents and siblings joined them to take part in the games and activities the boys had enjoyed throughout the week.
