The 2009 Miss Summerville High School Scholarship Pageant will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Summerville High School auditorium at 7 p.m. The young lady crowned as Miss SHS 2009 will receive a $1500 scholarship to the college of her choice.
This year’s pageant theme is “A Red Carpet Rendezvous.” The general atmosphere has been described as an energetic medley of old and new Hollywood. It gives the girls the opportunity to parade their unique sense of Hollywood glamour and style on the red carpet.
Thirty-seven girls will compete in the following divisions: Interview, Red Carpet Attire and Formal Wear. Miss SHS contestants will perform a talent and answer an on-stage interview question as well. The evening will also feature Miss Summerville High School 2008’s Carissa Benson, who will crown this year’s royalty and perform a monologue during the judge’s deliberation.
Special performances feature the musical talents of local artists Allison D. Esselman and Sarah R. Callahan. Callahan also choreographs the evening’s opening dance number and movement.
Pageant Director, Mary Lowery, says, “This has been a thrilling experience for me. It has been a privilege to work with such an amazing group of young women. It will be a night of fun, music, beauty and talent!”
Tickets will be on sale beginning Jan. 26 at the high school. The price of admission is $8 for general admission, $5 for students and faculty; children under five receive free admission. Sponsorship donations can also be made towards the Miss Summerville High School Scholarship Fund by calling the school or contacting the pageant director.

I don't know who wrote the comment above mine, but I suggest that person quit being a negative nelly. Mary Lowery is a very talented and creative individual who SHS is lucky to have as the director of the SHS pageant this year. I can guarantee that Mary's pageant program will exceed your expectations...like she does in every aspect of her life. As far as the SHS pageant, perhaps you should remember that this is a high school pageant with limited resources ...it's not Miss. America. Also, as a former SHS pageant & Junior Miss. America contestant I can assure you that the girls that are in the show have worked very hard for this night..(along with the pageant director who has volunteered her time to do this)it is a shame that you discount that. Perhaps you should stay home with your negative attitude or move to a bigger city which can fund the glitter and glam pageant you desire to see.

Having sat through a number of these pageants over the past couple of years I can only hope that this year's is run with a little more professionalism. Get an adult to do the introductions and let the local beauty queens parade with the group at the end. Start the pageant on time and make sure your judges are in their seats when the event begins. Don't let the pageant director drag out an already long program with a acceptance speach at the end of the program. Take the flowers, humbly say thank you, and announce the winners already!!! Make sure you do a couple of run-throughs with the AV Dept. and stop putting every American Idol reject on stage to perform. This pageant should be an evening of joy, but I can tell you, after sitting through a number of them, they're an evening of frustration. That frustration usually spills over onto the event about the time most folk's butts fall asleep!!! Let's hope "new management" get's it right this year.
