Narrative quilt making
Summerville quilt storyteller and artist Peggie Hartwell came to Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary to talk with 2nd and 3rd graders about her art form. During an art infusion lesson with Art Instructors Erica Harper and Elise Stuck, students created a quilt using the South Carolina symbols they studied in their class. Ms. Hartwell shared with each class how to create a “voice on cloth.” The students were very inquisitive and had lots of questions for Ms. Hartwell. “Narrative quilt making is my ‘voice on cloth.’ It allows me to revisit my childhood and recapture traditions and customs of generations of farmers from whom I descend. These sacred voyages have nurtured and molded my art form. Most importantly, it gives me the opportunity to honor my family’s great tradition of oral storytelling through my own visual quilted-expressions,” says Ms. Hartwell.
