Pinewood Preparatory School Science Department Head and Advanced Placement teacher Michael Newman traveled to the Clemson Sandhills Research station on the outskirts of Columbia with sophomores Daniel Zuvia, Katherine Gore, Hunter Baughman, Tyler Fridh and Dustin Pfaehler to compete in the South Carolina regionals of the National Envirothon competition.
This team competed against 26 public school teams that were composed predominately of juniors and seniors from throughout the state. At the end of the day, Pinewood finished third in the state, behind Spartanburg High Team A and Spartanburg High Team B.
Out of the six categories of competition the Pinewood crew had the high score in the soils division and the biodiversity division. Mr. Newman took the sophomores so that they could get a feel for the competition this year and maybe finish in the top 10, with the goal of winning it in the next couple of years. They blew that goal out of the water and as a result, each student won $125. Mr. Newman commented, “To dominate some of the larger public schools in the state in an academic competition is quite a feat.”
