Mary “Rachel” Shelbourne, a senior at Summerville High School, has been named a Hollingsworth Scholar at Furman University.  Shelbourne will join Furman’s freshman class this fall. She is ranked in the top 6 percent of her SHS class.

The Hollingsworth Scholarship provides more than $100,000 in scholarship aid over four years at the university. The renewable awards, named for the late John D. Hollingsworth, Jr., a Greenville businessman, are worth $25,000 per year and are available only to South Carolina residents.

Furman, a private, undergraduate liberal arts college with 2,600 students, is widely recognized for its rigorous academic program and strong faculty. The university has a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, and ranks among the nation’s top colleges in the number of National Merit Scholars enrolled.

Shelbourne is the daughter of  Brandt and Pamela Shelbourne of Summerville who both graduated from Furman in 1986. Her grandfather, (Mrs Shelbourne’s father), William Kenneth Burton is also a graduate, making Rachel the third generation in her family to attend the Univeristy.

South Carolina high school juniors interested in applying for the Hollingsworth Scholarship should visit the Furman website at www.engagefurman.com/hollingsworth/.  For more information, call the Furman Admissions office at 864-294-2034.
