Students participate in STAR events




Fort Dorchester High School students traveled to Columbia recently for the annual Family, Career, and Community Leaders of American FCCLA student organization conference competition.


This year's theme was "The Beat Goes ON" and marks the group's 61st anniversary.. There were 281 attendees and 180 students who competed in STAR events (Students Taking Action with Recognition.)


STAR events are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and individual achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership, occupational skills, and occupational preparation. The three-day conference gave FDHS students the opportunity to attend professional workshops and compete on the sate level.


Cindy Tang, a junior, competed and placed First in Applied Technology, an individual event, recognizes participants who develop a project using technology that addresses a concern related to Family and Consumer sciences and or related occupations and integrates and applies content from academic subjects. Cindy's concern related to not having enough information for the FCCLA chapter available on our current Culinary Arts website. She developed information that is useful for new and old members of FCCLA. Cindy will represent South Carolina in the occupational category at nationals.


Zanai Wallace, a senior, and Jasmine Lynch, a junior,, competed and placed First in Entrepreneurship, a team event that recognizes participants who develop a plan for a small business using Family and Consumer Sciences skills and sound business practice . Participants are evaluated on the business plan and an oral presentation and are required to have implemented the plan. The plan must relate to an area of Family and Consumer Sciences Education or related occupations. The plan developed was one for the career path of an Event Planner. Zanai and Jasmine will represent South Carolina in the occupational category if entrepreneurship at Nationals.


Jonathan Leonard, Jonathan Rhodes and Ebony Slater, all seniors, competed in the district and state Culinary Arts competition hosted at Trident Technical College. Jonathan Leopard placed First and Ebony Slater [;aced Third at the state competition. This team event recognizes participants who are enrolled in culinary arts food service training programs for their ability to work individually and as members of a team to produce a quality meal. A total of 24 students competed for nine awards. Jonathan Rhodes placed Second in the district competition. Jonathan Leonard and Ebony Slater placed First in the district competition and went on to compete at the sate level. Jonathan Leonard will represent South Carolina as one of a team of three at nationals.


Jonathan Leonard also received scholarships from Johnson and Wales in the amount of $1,000 for four consecutive years. Jasmine Lytch and Zanai Lytch both received scholarships for $1,000 each for four consecutive years. Cindy Tang received a scholarship in the amount of $500 for four consecutive years.
