Gregg capped a perfect season Wednesday with a 24-6 win over DuBose in the District Two Middle School Football championship game.
Brandon Brown scored two touchdowns and the Gregg defense made two interceptions to stop a pair of Wildcat drives as the Mustangs improved to 8-0. DuBose, which won the championship last year, dropped to 5-3 and finished in second place for the league.
“This is one of the best feelings I’ve ever had,” Gregg coach Kenneth Glover said. “These kids put forth so much effort. Every last one of them is passing and hasn’t had any behavior problems all year so I am proud of what they have accomplished on the field and off. I feel like I’m a father to all of them so I’ve enjoyed every minute of the season. We stuck together like a pack of brothers and that was the key.”
After a scoreless opening quarter at the Ashley Ridge High School field, Gregg got on the board with an 8-yard TD run by Brown in the first minute of the second quarter. The first of five unsuccessful conversion plays followed, leaving the Mustangs with a 6-0 lead.
The Gregg defense held the Wildcats’ on their ensuing possession, forcing DuBose to punt. After a big return by Hassan Washington, the Mustangs needed only one play to score.
Quarterback Gavin Williams connected with Curtis Hartman for a 51-yard TD reception with 4:16 remaining in the opening half.
DuBose needed only two minutes to answer as the team drove 55 yards on its ensuing possession. Wildcat QB Chris Felder completed a 35-yard pass on the drive, which he capped with a 7-yard run into the end zone for his team’s only score of the night.
Gregg carried a 12-6 lead into the half.
Washington opened the second half with a big kickoff return to again give Gregg good field possession. Then Williams completed five passes to march the Mustangs to the end zone. The drive was capped when the QB connected with Brown on a 6-yard TD pass.
Gregg held the Wildcats on their ensuing possession and then capitalized on another short field. Williams passed to Thangelo Whitlock, who made a diving reception just in front of the goal line. The officials marked the ball at the 1 and Hakeem Ellington finished the possession with a run into the end zone for the 24-6 score.
The next three possessions ended in interceptions. Whitlock had the first for Gregg and then Damien Gant returned the favor for DuBose. But the Wildcats’ final drive was cut short when Washington picked a pass. From there, the Mustangs just had to run out the clock.
