Green Wave volleyball team captures region crown
The Green Wave volleyball team reeled off its seventh straight region victory Thursday to capture the 2011 Region 8-AAAA championship outright.
Summerville (16-8, 7-1) split a tight tri-match with region foe Beaufort (8-9, 3-5) and non-region opponent Stratford Thursday to wrap up its regular season. The Wave defeated the Eagles 25-18, 25-22 before falling to Stratford 26-24, 25-23.
“We played well enough against Beaufort to beat them and clinch the top seed for the playoffs so I’m pleased with that,” Summerville coach Teresa Kendle said. “We had an opportunity against Stratford when we went up by several points, but then we allowed them to come back for the win.”
Following a 25-19, 25-17 Beaufort win over Stratford, the Wave honored its three senior volleyball players – Melissa Hanna, Kathryn Steverson and Taylor Horton.
The seniors then led Summerville in its victory over the Eagles, combining to score nearly half of the Wave’s points in the two games.
Steverson had seven kills against the Eagles. Hanna had five kills plus four service aces and Horton had four kills.
Juniors Zuri Green, Kayla Branton and Tinara Brown also contributed multiple points and freshman defensive specialist Sarah Windham did a good job anchoring the Wave’s back line.
Beaufort went down swinging, but was eliminated from the playoffs with the loss. Ashley Ridge finished in second place for the region and the third and final playoff seed went to third-place Fort Dorchester, which handed Summerville its only region loss on the opening night of the season.
Summerville hosted North Augusta in the first round of the state playoffs Tuesday in a match held after press time. Ashley Ridge hosted White Knoll and Fort Dorchester traveled to Lexington. Both those matches were also held after press time.
The second round is scheduled for Thursday. If Summerville advances it will host the winner of Tuesday’s West Florence/James Island match. If Ashley Ridge advances, it will either travel to Carolina Forest or host Dutch Fork.
