Jairy C. Hunter, MD A: Is the Appendix on the right or the left side?ANSWER: As the name implies, the appendix is an “extra” pocket of intestine located in the lower right side of the abdomen in most people.Problems arise when the appendix becomes obstructed or blocked, which can lead to distention and inflammation, a condition called appendicitis. This is a serious condition because the appendix can rupture within a very short time. If appendicitis is suspected, surgery is required emergently in most cases, because the appendix is in danger of rupture. This can lead to contamination of the abdominal cavity, a life-threatening condition. Early signs of appendicitis are usually vague, such as generalized abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting. Over a few hours, abdominal pain may worsen and localize in the right lower side, and is usually accompanied by fever (a temperature over 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit), and an elevated white blood cell count. A physical examination, laboratory tests, and an ultrasound or CT scan may be required for diagnosis. Appendicitis is very common between ages 10 and 20. If you think you may have appendicitis, you should seek immediate attention from the closest medical facility, such as your family doctor, an urgent care center, or any emergency room.
