A: Sharp pains, episodes of locking and inability to fully straighten the knee are definitely not "normal" for a healthy knee. Several conditions that occur in the knee can cause symptoms such as those you describe. The most common is a torn cartilage (meniscus). Arthritis and loose pieces of cartilage debris within the knee can also result in pain, locking and loss of motion. An examination and Xray of your knee are the first steps in finding the cause of the problem. Your physician may also recommend an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to help confirm the diagnosis and determine the proper course of treatment.
