A: The Vantas implant is a delivery system for medication that is used to treat prostate cancer.  The medication is released over a one year period, thereby not requiring more frequent injections, which is another way of giving the medicine.  This treatment, known as androgen deprivation, has side effects that include breast tenderness, possible breast enlargement, hot flashes, weight gain, impotence, less physical stamina, osteoporosis, and increased likelihood of bruising of the skin.  These effects occur because the medication counteracts the male hormone testosterone.  The side effects that you have mentioned are normal for this treatment.
