Q: A few days back my husband had pain in the chest and raised blood pressure. They have done a TFT (Tyroid Function Test). What is a TFT and is there any danger?

A: Thyroid function test (or TFT-s) is a blood test that measures the level of the thyroid hormone in the blood. It shows whether the blood level of the thyroid hormone is normal, elevated or decreased. The condition of elevated thyroid hormone is called hyperthyroidism, the condition of insufficient thyroid hormone is called hypothyroidism. Both hyper- and hypothyroidism can have ill effects on the cardiovascular system (including the heart and the blood pressure). My advice is if the test is abnormal it should be addressed by a qualified physician.
On a side note, however, if the TFT is normal, I would be very careful to make a conclusion that everything with your husband is O.K.. Is your husband overweight, is he a smoker, does he or anyone in his family have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. If the answer to any one of these questions is “yes”, please, look further for an appropriate medical advice.
