New hospital heading to Moncks Corner

Trident Health System has announced its intent to build a new hospital in Berkeley County.
The facility will be a three story, 50-bed hospital located on property adjacent to the current Moncks Corner Medical Center, which Trident Health System currently operates as an emergency and diagnostics facility, at 401 North Live Oak Drive in Moncks Corner.
“Trident Health System recognizes the need for a full service hospital to be located in Berkeley County,” said Terry Gunn, Trident Health System President and CEO.
The announcement received a “thumbs up” from Moncks Corner Mayor Bill Peagler.
“I’m so proud of Trident Health System for showing this level of commitment,” Peagler said.  “A full-service hospital in Berkeley County means an awful lot to our residents; it not only increases the quality of healthcare in our community, but also enhances the quality of life for our citizens, who won’t have to travel long distances for the care they need.
“A new hospital also equates to more job opportunities.  I applaud Trident Health System for this investment in Moncks Corner and Berkeley County.”
Trident Medical Center was built in 1973 to serve residents of North Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties, as all other hospitals were located on the peninsula.
“An outpatient facility was first built in Moncks Corner in 1983 and later developed into a 24-hour emergency department with various outpatient services,” Gunn said. “Now, due to increasing community need as a result of population growth, we plan to follow with construction of a full-service hospital.”
Berkeley Medical Center will provide general acute care hospital services. These include medical/surgical, obstetric and intensive care beds, emergency department and various outpatient services.
Also located on the property will be physician office space.
According to Dan Davis, Berkeley County Supervisor, the announcement of the health system’s intent to build a hospital is a much welcome one.
“I am really happy to hear that Trident Health System plans to further invest in Berkeley County and provide quality health care close to the homes of our citizens,” said Davis.  “Because of Moncks Corner Medical Center, Berkeley County has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Trident Health System.
“This is an exciting announcement for Berkeley County’s future.”
