And that time is all too often unexpected according to the American Red Cross.

Here in the Lowcountry, we are fortunate to have several hospitals available that perform extensive surgical procedures, such as organ transplants and

open-heart surgeries that require a number of blood products to be given.

20 percent of the blood supply from the American Red Cross is imported from out-of-state because they have a higher surplus.

“At this time, the Red Cross has low inventory levels of ALL blood types,” said Sandy Wallace, lab technician with Summerville Medical Center. “They are in constant need of replenishing their blood supply.”

By holding monthly blood drives, Summerville Medical Center and Trident Medical Center assist the tri-county area by replenishing the blood supply in our region.
