Rica Santiago, MD, knew from the time she was 5 that she wanted to be a doctor, and at the age of 15, when she required cryosurgery for retinal tears in both of her eyes, she found further inspiration in the woman who treated her. “Just seeing how caring and understanding she was – I looked up to her and wanted to be that kind of physician for my patients as well.” Dr. Santiago has found many women welcome the chance to see a female internist in North Charleston, leading her to focus on women’s health. Dr. Santiago talks with patients, listens to their concerns and develops a plan of action with them.
